The Gaza Kitchen
November 1, 2013 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Laila El-Haddad and Maggie Schmitt, authors of the recently published book The Gaza Kitchen, explore the distinctive cuisine and heritage of Palestine—offering both a universal and a singular view of the region’s cultural richness through the lens of food.
What is the connection between the history of a population and its food?
Who doesn’t consider the kitchen the most animated and inviting room in the house?
El-Haddad and Schmitt look at how cooking, farming, food security, and family histories intertwine with the broader social and economic realities of life along the Gaza Strip—illustrating that mesmerizing food (their book contains 130 recipes!) can survive and thrive even in the most embattled of landscapes.
Light refreshments inspired by the book included with event. Following the talk, the authors will sign copies of The Gaza Kitchen, which will be available for purchase.
