What is Disco Soup?
Disco Soup is a fun Slow Food Youth Network event that raises awareness about food waste and climate change.
Join the Virtual Disco Soup Challenge, April 25th-May 25th
This year the Portland Slow Food Youth Network (SFYN) has organized a month-long Virtual Disco Soup Challenge, from April 25th through May 25th, to encourage people to make and share a short video of making soup at home.
Following is info on how you can participate in the Portland SFYN Virtual Disco Soup Challenge. We are targeting students, and we are also inviting everyone, to participate by making soup at home with whatever is leftover in your fridge, AND making a fun 2-minute video of your soup-making to post on our Virtual Disco Soup Challenge YouTube Channel.
STEPS
Decide what kind of soup you're going to make by looking in your fridge and cupboards for food you ALREADY have. Using up food that is about to go bad is ideal since this is about limiting food waste.
Look for recipes online (or ask family for recipes) using ingredients you have on hand.
Prep your food:
* Wash your vegetables thoroughly.
* Use a cutting board when cutting. If you're a kid, ask an adult how to use a knife to cut food.
* DO NOT cross-contaminate vegetables and meat. Use a different cutting board and knife for these products (or thoroughly wash the knife and cutting board with soap and warm water between uses).
Record your video:
* Before starting the recording write out a list of your ingredients.
* Final video should be a max of 2 minutes and should include:
1. An introduction of yourself (first name only), what kind of soup you're making, and where you found the recipe.
2. Read the list of ingredients, and any substitutions you are making, and record the ingredient list that you have written so viewers can see it. Or display the ingredients together on the counter and video the ingredients before you start prepping them.
3. Record part of the soup ingredients being prepped (washed and chopped), and then part while it is cooking. (Music is encouraged.)
4. Final shot should be someone tasting the soup, could be you or a family member.
5. Tell the camera 1-2 facts about what you learned about sustainability / limiting waste at the end of the video.
6. Edit your video down to 2 minutes.
7 . Upload your video to a Google drive file and email the link to discosoup@slowfoodportland.org
If you are under the age of 18, please have your parents upload the video. Feel free to upload your video to your own social media platform and tag us with these hashtags:
