Slow Food Portland is the Portland chapter of Slow Food, a non-profit, member-supported organization founded in Italy in 1989 to counteract the culture of fast food. Slow Food brings the pleasure of taste, the rich history of tradition, the diversity of culture, and the concern for food production together to form a unique slow food movement that encompasses the globe.
Slow Food Portland supports Slow Food USA’s mission to create dramatic and lasting change in the food system, and promote a food system that is good, clean and fair for all. On a local and regional level we work to reconnect with people, traditions, plants, animals, fertile soils and waters that produce our food. We work to raise awareness and engagement in our community to help transform food policy, production practices, and market forces to ensure equity, sustainability, and pleasure in the food we eat.
Slow Food Worldwide
Slow Food is a global grassroots organization that has over 100,000 members and 1,500 convivia, or local chapters, in 153 countries throughout the world. The local chapters provide the backbone of Slow Food and work to bring about change within their communities and regions. International programs include Terra Madre, Slow Fish, Ark of Taste, Salone del Gusto, and Slow Canteens.
In addition to volunteer-staffed chapters throughout the US, Slow Food USA has a small paid staff in Brooklyn, NY, to help oversee and guide our work here. They convene leadership conferences, initiate and manage programs, and oversee the membership throughout the states.
